WOW. This is Yellowface to the maximum. I can't believe this racist practice is used in this "Millie" production! Wearing the costumes were somewhat OK, but taping the eyes? That is extreme and NOT acceptable!
Do you people still live in the 1920s? Someone should shut down this play. This is insanely offensive.
I can't believe this is still going on. That Asian Americans are still subject to their physical differences being caricatured, deformed, and mocked.
As a 1st generation Chinese American college student, the upsetting historical implications of yellow face doesn't matter as much to me as my own physical appearance used as something to perpetuate a musical caught up in white racist love.
As a filmmaker, I know the aesthetics and wonders of remaking an awesome period piece. But I wouldn't remake Birth of a Nation if I was given a $100 million dollar budget.
Do I need to bleach my skin, tape open my eyes, and dye my hair to be able to play a classical white-dominated play? There are plenty of aspiring Asian actors and actresses in Chicago. I'm sure there are more all over the country. You might want to keep this in mind.
